Flowering Cacti No. 003
This joyful burst of flowering cacti and succulents emerged in semi-dissociative flow state while processing buried grief from losing my dad. I chose the subject, then zoned out and let the brush move freely. This was one of the first times my style loosened up, shifting from rigid control to bold, unapologetic color and feeling. Stepping back, I thought: I made that? It was magical, a pure channel to subconscious inspiration.
Flowering cacti and succulents appear again and again in my work, a subject I return to whenever my style evolves. Growing up in the California Mojave Desert, my dad would take me down side dirt roads in my mom’s Honda Accord (not an off-roading car). We’d run out of gas and walk with the can to the nearest station. As a kid I saw it as pure adventure. As an adult, I’d be horrified. Yet the desert is still home. It connects me to him, to those wandering memories, and to the resilience of plants that bloom where nothing should.

- Framed Paper prints: Mounted to foam core and secured inside a solid oak frame with optical-grade acrylic glazing. Shatter resistant, lightweight, and low-glare. No mat, so the full edge-to-edge composition is preserved exactly as intended.
